Elizabeth Donohoe scored 25 points — including eight straight to start the second quarter — to lead No. 8-ranked Edmond North to a 65-51 win over No. 10 Edmond Santa Fe on Tuesday night.
It was much easier this time around for North (12-2), who had to battle from a 19-0 hole to beat the Lady Wolves in the Edmond Open. This time the Lady Huskies took the lead for good with 5:22 left in the first quarter on a jumper by Anna Kimsey, making it 4-2.
“That was obviously much better, it’s never easy when you spot the other team 19 points,” North head coach Kevin Korstjens said. “I was impressed with how hard this team worked. Even when we were missing shots nobody got down, they just kept their heads up and kept working.”
Kimsey and Caroline Collins scored four points apiece in the first quarter as the Lady Huskies grabbed a 12-8 lead. Donohoe was held scoreless in the first eight minutes, but the sophomore, who has verbally committed to Oklahoma State, more than made up for it in the second quarter.
Following a basket by Blessing Uba that cut the lead to 12-10, Donohoe drained four straight shots in less than two minutes, giving the Lady Huskies a 20-10 cushion.
“The girls definitely didn’t force it in to her. They did a great job of finding her in scoring position,” Korstjens said.
Santa Fe (9-4) cut the deficit to five, but Donohoe hit a pair of free throws, followed by baskets from Kimsey and Tiara Dewberry, making it 26-15 with 3:58 left before the half. Kimsey then drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key, and TaNita Dewberry and Tiara closed out the half with two-points apiece, as North led 37-24 at the break.
Santa Fe’s Courtney Walker scored six straight points late in the third to cut North’s lead to single-digits, but Collins answered with a three from the corner, and Natalie Colton hit a driving shot to up the lead to 50-36.
Donohoe stretched the Lady Huskies lead to 18 in the fourth, hitting a three-pointer and a couple of free throws to make it 61-43 at the 2:59 mark.
Uba and Walker, both hit three-pointers in the waning moments of the contest but it was too late.
Donohoe finished with seven rebounds and four assists. TaNita Dewberry had 10 points, while Kimsey and Collins had nine apiece. Tiara Dewberry finished with eight points.
Blessing led the Lady Wolves with 21 points, while Walker had 20.
North will take a five game win streak into a battle with No. 6-ranked Memorial. That contest will be held at the Siberian Gym at 6 p.m. Santa Fe is off until next Tuesday.
