The Edmond North girls took Choctaw’s best shot in the second half, but they weren’t about to let things get out of control. Sophomore Elizabeth Donohoe scored nine points in the fourth quarter to lead the No. 5-ranked Lady Huskies past Choctaw for the third time this season, winning 48-33.
“Choctaw is a good team, they were doing some different things defensively that was giving us trouble at times,” North coach Kevin Korstjens said. “We definitely didn’t play nearly as hard in the third quarter, but we picked it back up in the fourth and finished the game.”
Donohoe led the way for North with a game-high 22 points and 12 rebounds, while TaNita Dewberry and Caroline Collins added eight points apiece.
After trailing by double-digits for much of the night the Yellowjackets rallied in the third quarter. Jenny Holcomb got a putback off a missed free throw attempt to pull Choctaw within six points, 31-25 at the end of the third quarter.
But the Lady Huskies didn’t let them get any closer, as Donohoe completed a conventional three-point play early in the fourth, pushing the lead back to double digits. North continued on a 9-0 run, and outscored the Yellowjackets 17-8 in the final eight minutes of play for their 12th straight win.
“Those girls are tough, they play hard, they’re always scrappy and they’re well coached,” Korstjens said about Choctaw. “It’s always tough to win whether it’s the first time or third time. We’re glad to get that one and get refocused for PC North on Thursday.”
Donohoe scored 11 points in the first quarter, helping the Lady Huskies open a 13-4 lead at the end of one. North scored just nine points in the second quarter, but maintained control, leading 22-13 at halftime.
Ashlie Fauchier led the way for the Yellowjackets with 10 points.
Next up for the Lady Huskies is a trip to Putnam City North on Thursday night for a makeup game.
