Natalie Colton made sure senior night was one she would remember, as the senior guard knocked down a three-pointer to force overtime, then scored seven of her 12 points in the extra period as No. 5 Edmond North knocked off No. 10 Santa Fe 63-51 at the Siberian Gym on Friday night.
“Kelsey Phillhower provided a spark for us off the bench on defense, and late in the game Natalie and Liz (Donohoe) hit some big shots,” North coach Kevin Korstjens said. “They just didn’t give up. No complaining, they played two games in three days, won the conference last night, and won the city championship tonight.”
Donohoe notched another double-double with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds. The sophomore scored eight points in the first quarter, giving the Lady Huskies a 14-8 lead, but No. 10 Santa Fe responded with an 8-0 run to end the second to go up 23-20.
Tate Hardaker sparked the run with a 3-pointer, followed by baskets from Courtney Walker, Blessing Uba and Tory Lanier.
As bright as Donohoe shined on this night, Walker, a freshman, nearly out-staged her. Walker scored just two points in the first half, before scoring 13 in the second half.
A pair of free throws by Walker with 3:55 left in the third, gave Santa Fe its biggest lead of the night at 31-26.
But a 3-pointer by Caroline Collins cut it to two, and Santa Fe went into the fourth holding a 35-33 lead.
Santa Fe appeared to be in the drivers seat early in the quarter as Blessing Uba broke a 35-35 tie, when she took a pass from Walker who had stole the ball, and made an easy layup. Uba, who scored a team-high 16 points, knocked down another shot to go up by four.
But Anna Kimsey drained a three-pointer from the left corner while drawing contact and converted a rare four-point play to tie it up at 39-39 with 5:21 remaining.
Jimi Blagowsky answered with a three on the other end, before Donohoe converted on a three-point play to make it 42-all.
Walker got a layup and a free shot with just under two to play, and Uba knocked down a pair at the charity stripe to give the Lady Wolves a 49-44 lead with 1:31 left.
But Donohoe came back with a pair of free throws, before Colton delivered a three from the top of the key with 1:04 remaining to force the extra period.
TaNita Dewberry, who finished with nine points and eight boards, started it with a 15-footer, followed by another three from Colton. Donohoe and Colton add four more points, before Santa Fe’s Lindsey Stanley stopped a 9-0 run with a short jumper. Donohoe, Kimsey and Colton finished the game off combining to go 5-of-6 at the charity stripe.
Kimsey finished with nine points, followed by Collins with seven.
