The Edmond North girls were celebrating in Sapulpa on Thursday night. The No. 5-ranked Lady Huskies are headed back to the Class 6A State Tournament for the first time in 12 years, after knocking off Tulsa Memorial 48-35 in Thursday night’s area championship at Sapulpa High School.
“I couldn’t be more happy for them,” North coach Kevin Korstjens said. “Going to state has been a goal they set and I can’t be more pleased and proud of them. It just shows that hard work pays off.”
Anna Kimsey led the way for the Lady Huskies with 13 points and five rebounds. Caroline Collins also finished in double-figures with 11 points, while hitting 3-of-5 from 3-point range. Elizabeth Donohoe finished with nine points and eight rebounds and TaNita Dewberry added eight points and six boards.
The Lady Huskies (23-2) shut down No. 7 Memorial early with their stifling defense. North held the Chargers to just 10 points in the first half, and did not let up in the second half.
“I thought our effort defensively was fantastic the whole game, to hold anyone to 10 points is just spectacular, especially a talented team like Memorial that is still playing now,” Korstjens said.
