EDMOND —
Rhonda Lawson knew her team wouldn’t get many chances against top-ranked Edmond North on Monday night. But when those opportunities arose, she knew her Santa Fe girls would be ready.
After struggling to get anything going against North, Madison Martin tied the game with a solo homer in the sixth and Breezy McComas delivered the game winner as she hit a walk-off single in the seventh for a 2-1 Edlam win at Santa Fe High School.
“These girls never say die, they just keep plugging and plugging,” Lawson said. “They just never quit.”
Dixon picked up the first out of the seventh inning, but was lifted after walking Karly Nevez. Madison Nordyke took the circle and got Siara Price to line out to first for the second out of the inning. Nevez later took second on a wild pitch and was able to score when McComas dropped a hit into shallow left field.
“We hit the ball hard and they made some good plays and came back,” North coach Rick Nordyke said. “It was a battle. Both pitchers did well.”
North and Santa Fe finish with a tie for the city championship again this season. The Lady Huskies took the other meeting of the year, 5-3 at North, and both teams finished with a season sweep of rival Memorial.
Martin kept the Lady Wolves in the game all night as she went toe-to-toe with Dixon. Martin gave up just five hits and got plenty of help from her teammates in the field. Kayley Humann made a spectacular diving grab to save a run in the fifth, and Nevez came up with a couple of leaping grabs at short.
“Kayley Humann’s diving catch in center was a game changer,” Lawson said. “And then Karly Nevez snagged that line drive out of the air. We had that one error which cost us a run, but it didn’t get us down.”
North jumped on the board first when they capitalized on a Santa Fe error in the fourth. Kady Self reached on the error to lead off the inning and later advanced to third off a wild pitch and passed ball. Martin retired the next two batters before giving up an RBI double to Dixon to make it a 1-0 game.
After four hitless innings, the Lady Wolves finally broke through at the plate in the late innings. Nevez picked up Santa Fe’s first hit of the night in the fifth and Price followed it up with a walk to load the bases. But Dixon managed to wiggle out of the jam as she got McComas to fly out to right ending the inning.
Martin then made sure the Lady Wolves wouldn’t come up empty as she blasted a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence to knot it up 1-1 in the sixth.
North looked to regain their lead in the bottom of the top of the seventh as Ashton Smith and Genevie Lopez hit back-to-back singles with just one out. But that’s all the closer they’d get as Martin got the next two batters to line out.
Dixon finished the night with 11 strikeouts and three hits allowed.
Both teams will head to regionals later this week. North hosts a regional on Thursday and will take on Putnam City West in the first round at noon. Santa Fe heads to Jenks on Wednesday and will play Bixby in the opening round at 2 p.m.
