Saints get their kicks on Route 66

WELLSTON — The Oklahoma Christian School’s football team got an unexpected week off last Friday when Wynnewood canceled due to the H1N1 virus, but a break seemed to be just what the doctor ordered for the Saints as they crushed the Wellston Tigers 55-0 to pull to 3-1 in district play.

Jon Sikes got things started for the Saints when he took the ball 13 yards for a score at the 7:50 mark of the first quarter, Keegan Carter added the extra point and OCS never looked back.

After senior defensive lineman Jeff Levy blocked and recovered a punt, quarterback Jack Warren found Skyler Sikes for a 19-yard touchdown. Another Carter extra point would make it 14-0. Once more the Saints defense would come up big, Kory Kobs grabbed an interception at the 4:30 mark in the first but the Saints would give the ball back when the offense stalled. Defensive pressure on Wellston quarterback David Dinse would force a fumble and consequently the ball was pushed all the way back to the endzone where defensive end Sam Hitchcock would recover the ball and give OCS its first of three defensive scores on the evening and pushing the first quarter score to 21-0.

Hitchcock, defensive back Rustin Purser, and linebacker Zach Frankfurt would all recover fumbles for touchdowns for OCS with Frankfurt returning the ball 63 yards for his score.

“We rotated a lot of young guys on defense early tonight so it was really good to see them play well,” head coach Derek Turner said.

OCS piled up 35 points by halftime and added 20 more in the last two quarters to secure the shootout and the final of 55-0.

The Saints offense worked the ball well on the ground, running back Jeff Smith tallied 97 yards total and found the endzone three times for the Saints. Warren also looked good for the Saints going 10-of-14 for 167 yards, 1 touchdown, and no interceptions.

“These guys were really ready to play tonight, I’ve had ornery teenagers for two weeks so I needed to get them out on the field”, Turner said.

“It was a little bit weird for the first Friday of my high school football career I was free on a Friday night. I didn’t know what to do so I just sat around watching ‘House’ all night,” Levy said. “Its homecoming and fall break for us next week so we need to make sure that we don’t get distracted, we just need to focus and also have some fun getting ready next week,” Levy said.

Many reserves saw action for OCS in the second half, notably Chris Easterly who picked off a pass for the Saints in the fourth quarter and Mitchell Draelos who carried three times for 17 yards.

Next up is Homecoming for the Saints as they host Minco on Thursday night.
