North girls win Metro Conference title
BETHANY — If any state high school is going to beat the Edmond North girls, it’s going to have to come in the postseason. The Lady Huskies wrapped up the regular season with their sixth championship, beating out rival Santa Fe for the Metro Conference title Tuesday afternoon at a muddy Eldon Lyon Park.
“It’s tough competition in the Metro Conference and we ran well in the sloppy conditions,” North coach Kent Douglas said. “This was good, we needed this today and it will help us at regionals.”
North had six girls win all-conference honors and finished with a score of 20. Santa Fe was second at 54, Mustang finished third with 75 and Yukon was fourth at 89.
Meredith Farley topped teammate Anna Kimsey by just over two seconds for the individual title. Both runners were neck and neck throughout the entire 3200-meter course, but Farley pulled through the gate first at 12:57.03, while Kimsey was second at 12:59.77.
Also earning all-conference honors for North was Ashley Webb, Hannah Helker, Megan Watson and Martha Blaess. Webb came in fourth place (13:06), Helker was fifth (13:10), Watson finished eighth (13:23) and Martha Blaess rounded out the top 10 (13:38). Jordan Taylor earned honorable mention honors with a 13th-place finish (13:47).
“I don’t have that one that can go away and leave everybody, but I have five to seven girls on the varsity that pack together and that’s the reason why we’ve won state championships and state-runners up in the past,” Douglas said.
Rachel Davis paced the Lady Wolves with a bronze medal finish.
The freshman completed the race in 13:02, just one week after taking third on the same course in the Southwestern Christian University Invitational.
Sophomore Lexie Crist also earned all-conference honors for Santa Fe, finishing ninth (13:28).
Senior Alyssa Nale was honorable mention with a 15th-place finish (14:04), Hannah Weiss finished 16th (14:07) and Julissa Tamez was 19th (14:19).
“I was very pleased with our girls,” Santa Fe coach Sherryl McGreevy said. “We came and ran this last week, and I was glad that our girls did it and had that know how with those hills and not knowing what’s ahead of you.”
Both teams will have some time to rest up for regionals, which are set for Oct. 24 in Norman and Tulsa.
