Playoff dreams may have ended for the Santa Fe football team, but that doesn’t mean they can’t play the spoiler role.
The Timberwolves (4-3, 2-3) are coming off three straight losses, but still entertain thoughts of reaching the playoffs should they win the remainder of its games.
Typically a game with district title implications on the line, both teams come into the game limping just a bit. The T-Wolves last win came on Oct. 2 against Moore. And the Wolves haven’t won since Sept. 18.
“They have had some bad luck. Much like us, they have had some injury problems, but they have a chance to continue on in the playoffs, and we have a chance to maybe end it for them,” first-year head coach Bruce Gowen said.
Santa Fe (1-7, 0-5) has had a rough season. The Wolves have dropped three games by one point, another by nine, and an overtime thriller to Mustang.
But all is not lost at Santa Fe.
“It’s less about me and more about the players,” Gowen said. “These guys are proud of the tradition here at Santa Fe, we’re disappointed about the losses, but they are going to leave their impressions here. These guys have kept working and fought all the way to the end. And they came together as a team. There are other things to look at rather than wins and losses.”
There is still talent at both school’s and two of the best tailback’s in the entire state will get a chance to square off.
Norman North tailback Richard Peoples has rushed for 764 yards and four scores. Meanwhile, Santa Fe counters with Brian Mills, who is third in the state with 830 yards and six touchdowns.
Brad Valentino has had a good year at the quarterback position for Norman North. The junior has passed for 1,094 yards and nine touchdowns.
The Wolves should have some scoring opportunities. Over the last three weeks the T-Wolves are giving up an average of 47 points a game, 142 total.
Santa Fe has given up just 177 points on the season.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. at Norman.
