North falls to Lawton 34-16
LAWTON — Edmond North’s hopes a deep playoff run came to a halt Friday night as they were knocked out in the first round with a 34-16 loss to Lawton before a lively crowd at Cameron Stadium.
The Wolverines jumped to a 14-0 lead, watched North storm back for a 16-14 halftime lead, then rolled the Huskies in the second half.
North finishes the season 8-3, while the Wolverines head to the second round, where they will travel to No. 2 Tulsa Union next week.
Senior Joe Aska rushed for 123 yards on a whopping 33 carries, but only three rushes covered more than 10 yards against the swarming LHS defense. Quarterback Travis Townsend also had some success throwing the ball, completing 10 of 25 attempts for 153 yards.
The running game was the key for Lawton on Friday. Charles Smith rushed for 133 yards and two touchdowns and Domonique Massengill added 105 yards on just nine carries. Overall, Lawton ran the ball 46 times for 274 yards.
“It was a great game plan by Brad Widger and Ryan Breeze,” Lawton head coach Randy Breeze said. “Our offensive line is playing super. They’re very well coached.”
Lawton High owned the first quarter, North the second.
The Wolverines went 39 yards in four plays for a 7-0 lead, thanks to runs of 24 and 12 yards by Massengill. The payoff was a three-yard pass from Cody Miller to Patrick Diaz.Wojciechowski fielded a line-drive punt on the run at the LHS 19, broke through the initial North wave and reversed field twice to complete his 81-yarder. Clint Blevins’ kick made it 14-0.
North took it from there, driving 82 and 55 yards for touchdowns and 23 yards to set up Austin Brasher for the go-ahead 37-yard field goal. Aska got the TDs on runs of three and 13 yards.
Lawton had early success stopping the Huskies’ running game but Townsend was able to find open receivers for five first downs. The Wolverines helped by drawing seven penalties for 77 yards.
Lawton was back at the North 31 in the final minute of the second half but Dakota Lambeth stopped Miller for no gain on fourth-and-one.
The Wolverines regained the lead on their second possession of the second half. Wojciechowski started things with a 12-yard punt return to the 37, Massengill ripped off a 21-yard gain over the right side and Smith ran a trap for the final 16 paces and a 20-16 lead.
Lawton finished the night with a one-yard touchdown sneak by Miller and a late score by Smith to make it a 34-16 final.

Tigers run past North
The Edmond North girl’s basketball fought feverishly to keep their season alive, but an early 17-point hole proved too much to overcome in Friday night’s Class 6A State Semifinal contest. Norman put the Lady Huskies in an early 12-0 hole and rolled behind the spectacular play of Kamra King in the 69-50 win at the Mabee Center.
King finished with a career-high 33 points and was picture perfect for the Tigers. The junior put pressure on North all night with her speed and ability to drive the lane.
While King stole the show at the Mabee Center, Elizabeth Donohoe was nearly as impressive for the Lady Huskies. The junior finished with a team-high 28 points and fueled North’s second half surge. -
