No. 4-ranked Edmond North used a big second quarter to run away from No. 9 Putnam City North in its season opener on Friday night as they cruised to a 53-35 win at the Siberian Gym.
“It’s good to come out and get a win. It seemed like the girls were a little over-excited in the first quarter, befor they settled down,” North head coach Kevin Korstjens said. “The big thing was getting offensive rebounds.”
The Lady Huskies (1-0) outrebounded the visitors 41-18 in the game and were paced by Anna Kimsey, who scored a game-high 19 points.
North held a 11-7 lead after the first quarter, before outscoring the Lady Panthers 21-5 in the second to take a commanding 32-12 lead into the half.
“Defense was our focus, defense and rebounding. And when we’re focused on those things we can be pretty good. I thought in the second quarter we bought into it,” Korstjens said.
The Lady Huskies expanded their lead to 46-18 after three quarters before going on cruise control for the remainder of the contest.
Elizabeth Donohoe scored 12 points and pulled down eight rebounds, Tanita Dewberry scored six, Emily Davis had five, Tiarra Dewberry finished with four, while Ashley Webb and Ella Voss, each scored two apiece.
Up next for the Lady Huskies is Mustang at home on Tuesday night.
“They have a new coach, not real sure what they have, but he’s a good coach and I’m sure we’ll have our hands full with them,” Korstjens said.
