EDMOND —
The Deer Creek wrestlers bolstered their lineup for the state tournament Saturday evening as they finished with seven state qualifiers at the Class 5A West regional tournament.
“There were a few other guys I thought should have made state, but I was pleased with the way our guys wrestled this weekend,” Deer Creek coach Andy Howington said. “We have a lot of work to do this week and fix some of our mistakes before state.”
Leading the way for the Antlers were Cole Pacheco and Nolan Boyd, who each captured regional championships Saturday night at Deer Creek High School.
Pacheco, a state runner-up a year ago, flexed his muscles with a second-period fall against Kendall Carnahan of Duncan in the 145-pound finals. Then in the 182-pound finals, Boyd showed he’s ready for a run at a third state title with a 4-0 win against Garrett Shaw of Lawton MacArthur.
“Cole has been wrestling really well this year and we counted it up the other day and he’s beaten four state champions this year and several other placers. He has a very tough weight class, but we have all the confidence in the world in him.”
Howington was equally thrilled about Boyd’s title and chances at a third straight state title.
“Nolan has been putting in a lot of extra work, so needs to stay focused this week at state,” Howington said. “The guys he’s going to face have nothing to lose, but he really wants to win another state title and I believe he can do it.”
Tim Hicks, Chad Draper and Tyler Follis also made a trip to the regional finals, but came up short Saturday night. Hicks stayed with Lawton MacArthur’s Cole Power before getting pinned with 28 seconds left in regulation in the 120-pound finals. Draper lost by fall at 152 and Follis dropped a 2-1 decision at heavyweight.
Atticus Young (138) and Austin Loomis (220) also earned a trip to state with fourth-place finishes.
“I don’t think a lot of people realized how difficult that 138-pound bracket was so we’re pleased to see Atticus make state,” Howington said. “And Austin Loomis really only has one year of wrestling experience, so seeing him qualify was great.”
Altus edged Lawton MacArthur by a half a point for the regional team title, while the Antlers came in third with 189.50.
