EDMOND —
Stephanie Fleig scored the lone goal of the game with just over 10 minutes remaining to lift Central Oklahoma past Nebraska-Kearney 1-0 Sunday afternoon at chilly Tom Thompson Field.
The No. 24-ranked Bronchos missed out on numerous scoring chances in outshooting the Lopers by a staggering 21-5 margin, but could never get a ball into the net until Fleig’s kick found the mark.
It was the fifth goal of the season for the senior midfielder, who scored at the 79:54 mark off an assist by Caitlin Bond.
“Once again we had lots of opportunities to score and just didn’t get it done,” UCO coach Mike Cook said. “We really did a good job defensively, but we’ve got to do a better job of finishing our chances.”
The Bronchos were also hurt by seven offsides calls, while UNK’s goalkeeper snuffed out seven shots between the posts.
UCO improved to 11-1-1 on the year and remained tied for the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association lead at 6-0-1.
The Bronchos go to Warrensburg, Mo. Wednesday for a big showdown with defending league champion and co-leader Central Missouri.
