Deer Creek cross country sweeps tourney honors

MIDWEST CITY — The Deer Creek cross country teams completed a clean sweep of all four divisions of the Suburban Conference Championships Friday at Carl Albert.

Distance ace Bryce Balenseifen paced the Antlers’ boys to the championship as he led a 1-2-3-4 parade across the finish line, while the Lady Antlers also scored a sweep as Sheri Snyder was the first of five straight DC runners to finish at the front of the pack.

Both DC boys and girls junior varsity squads also claimed victories in the conference championships.

Balenseifen continued his dominance in the distance races with a winning time of 16:55.35. Blaine Powell was second at 17:12.68 followed closely by Chandler King and Adam Warren.

Brandon Greenlee of Guthrie interrupted total domination by the Antlers as he slipped into fifth place before two more Deer Creek runners, Brent Hollrah and Grant Schatzman crossed the finish line. Drake DiAngelo came in ninth place to give the Antlers seven of the top 10 and a low score of 16, well ahead of runner-up Piedmont with 71 and third place Shawnee.

In all, 53 runners competed in the 5K race,

The Deer Creek ladies were equally as dominant as they took the top five spots for a composite of 15 with Shawnee a distant second with 59 points. Third place went to Guthrie.

Snyder led the victorious charge for the Lady Antlers with a winning time of 12:51.67 for the 3200 meter course. She was closely followed by Ashton England with a time of 12:52.32, then Brianne Kirchgessner, Kelsie Hancock and Avery Buck.

DC’s Rachel Lewis and Amalie Haram then came across in seventh and eighth place to duplicate the boys’ top 10 domination.

JV squads also dominate

Total domination was also the theme for the Deer Creek junior varsity squads as the girls matched the varsity's top 5 finish for 15 points actually went two better with the top seven across the finish line, while the boys JV squad was just one point away with 16.

Leading the sweep for the girls was Sabrina Simmons with a 14:04.75, just ahead of Sydnee Witt and Monica Kim, who had 14:36.23 and 14:42.83, respectively. Rounding out the top 7 were Taylor Heyburn, Anne Nigg, Kaleigh Ewing and Andi Huslig.

Also representing the conference champion squad were Katy Ewing, Jaden Dunn, Micailah Sanders, Kasie Hollrah, Taylor Goldman, Mackenzie Hill, Victoria King, Casey Gaines, Mackenzie Rudolph, Annalyse Williams, Corrine Hood and Casey Maxwell.

Devin Provines ran a 17:33.06 to take the gold medal in the JV boys race, followed closely by Rodolfo Rojo and Connor Wilson. Andrew Prescott rounded out the top four for the Antlers. Also in the top 10 were Jose Garcia, Wyatt Bradbury, Bryce Wallace and Mason Board.

In the 5K race for Deer Creek were Conner Boothe, Sam Sasser, David Calfy, Preston Ray, Ryan Waldroop, Robert Heyburn, Andrew Barton, Hayden Ray, Gabe Buckles and Dalton Alexander.

Also, Austin Calise, Nolan Hill, Tyler Smith, Evan Jordan, Jack Peregrin, Nick Wehba, Jorge Sarrosa, Brant Smith, Hunter Goodwin, Brett Zimdars, Mason Lepak, Kyle Hickman, Sean Anderson, Buster Mendenhall, Matt Kahne, Riley Shannon, James Rodesney, Ryan Sternlof, Dylan Amend, Bryton Cho and Seth Beam.

The Deer Creek varsity will be competing in the 5A regionals at Norman on Saturday and qualifiers there will move on to the state championship hosted by Edmond Santa Fe on Nov. 2.
