Antlers win; sets up showdown with McGuinness

The Edmond Sun

EDMOND — Deer Creek creamed Northwest, 59-6 Friday night at Deer Creek High School and led 52-zip at the break.

The victory ups the Antlers’ record to 6-3, setting up a final district matchup with McGuinness at home next Friday. The winner will be the No. 3 seed and either way, both squads will draw either Ardmore, Lawton MacArthur or Del City in the first round of the playoffs on the road the ensuing week.

Guthrie is No. 1 in the Antlers’ district and Carl Albert has wrapped up the two seed.

“I was really pleased the way we took care of things,” Deer Creek skipper Grant Gower stated. “They (Northwest) had McGuinness down 13-7 after the first quarter last week and the week before that, Carl Albert had them down just 14-7 after the first quarter.”

Deer Creek quarterback Caden Sander rushed for four scores and hit Noah McGraw with a 12-yard touchdown pass. Sander ran the ball 13 times for 121 yards with an additional 81 through the air on 8-of-12 passing.

Marcus Coleman hit the end zone twice off of runs and fellow Antler Alec James accounted for the remaining rushing score.

Antler kicker Dillon Noble was an untarnished 8-for-8 on extra-point tries and also made good on a 29-yard field goal.

Northwest fell to 3-6 with the loss.

“I’d decide to play any of them (Del City, Ardmore or Lawton MacArthur) than have to play our competitive district in Carl Albert, Guthrie or McGuinness in the playoffs,” Gower said. “I feel good where we’re going.”

On defense for Deer Creek, Daniel Smith fell on a fumble.
