North edges Memorial in Edlam softball duel

EDMOND — There were two Edlam games Friday, one settled at Wantland and the other a mile or so away at Memorial.

Janet Chartney's Memorial softball team stayed even with the No. 2 Edmond North Huskies until the sixth inning, but a ground ball by North's Sheridan Bond that actually hit first base let the Huskies edge out the Bulldogs by one, 2-1.

Both teams crossed the plate in the first inning. North centerfielder Kady Self knocked in shortstop Bond to start the scoring early. Then in the bottom of the first, the home team returned the favor when third baseman Lindsay Littles made it to first base on a North error and scored centerfielder Alexis Bracaglia.

Pitching and fielding took over after the first. North's Madison Nordyke threw the win for North going six and one-third innings. Haley Squier was on the mound for the first three innings for the 'Dogs until handing the ball over to Rachel Baker to finish the game.

The contest stayed tied at one through five, then North struck. Ashton Smith hit a rope to left field followed by a similar shot by Genevie Lopez to put runners on first and second. Sheridan stepped up to the plate and put one on the ground down the first base line. The ball hit the bag to stay fair and speedy Smith rounded third and managed to slide in under the tag of catcher Shelbie Smith for the winning run.

Rick Nordyke’s Huskies are scheduled for another Edlam matchup Tuesday at home against Santa Fe while Memorial will host Deer Creek the same day. The Lady Antlers are ranked eighth in Class 5A.
