The Edmond Sun
Edmond North scraped and scrapped and never quit until the gun sounded Friday night in a 42-35 setback to Norman North at Wantland Stadium.
The Huskies found themselves in the biggest hole at 42-21 midway through the fourth period after Timberwolf quarterback John Kolar scored his second running touchdown of the night. That TD was one of two Norman North touchdowns coming off Edmond North interceptions and the Timberwolves picked off another pass in the end zone when Edmond North faced a fourth-and-one at the Norman North two-yard line. The Huskies had three passes picked off and were stuffed on a fourth-and-one at the Timberwolves’ six-yard line in the second period. The T-Wolves did not turn the ball over in the entirety of the game.
But despite the dire consequence of trailing by 21 points in the final stanza, Edmond North made it a scary game by having a chance to tie with an onside kick in the final minutes, but the kick went out of bounds as the T-Wolves ran out the clock.
With 5:38 left in regulation, the Huskies made it 42-28 on a Zack Jenkins two-yard power run and with just 31 seconds to play, an uncovered Ezel McIntee hauled in Stephen McClernon’s third passing score of the night to get within 42-35. McClernon completed 14-of-29 passes for 269 yards, with 177 of it going to Luke Rossi, who caught 10 passes and pair of scores, including a brilliant catch-and-run on a post pattern in the second quarter. On an underthrown pass, Rossi waited for the ball, then shook a guy off his back and clunked into the end zone from 58 yards away.
Rossi caught all four of McClernon’s completions in the opening half for 111 yards that included a 35-yard gain.
Teammate Miles Jones caught a pair of passes for 59 yards and had a 38-yard run set up Richard McCauley’s five-yard TD run at the start of the second quarter.
Though Kolar threw for 297 yards on 18-of-25 passing without a pick, he connected just one time through the air for a TD when leading receiver Nick Basquine got behind the defense. That allowed for an easy lob pass that traversed 50 yards to give the Timberwolves a 14-7 advantage with just over 11 minutes left in the second quarter. Basquine hauled in seven passes for 182 yards and the touchdown.
Norman North tight end in 6-4, 235-pound Payton Prince scored three times running the ball while taking direct snaps from center.
The University of Tulsa commit opened the game’s scoring when he jumped over an Edmond North defender and rumbled 42 yards into the end zone. He also scored twice on two-yard runs.
The Huskies will host Moore on Thursday.
