Ex-ESC standouts help Oklahoma Alliance FC tie Mexican Nat'l Team
BETHANY — Dria Hampton and Kaylie Garcia have played a countless number of soccer games, but none were quite like Thursday night’s exhibition game against the Mexican National team at Southern Nazarene University. The former Edmond Soccer Club standouts helped the Oklahoma Alliance FC pull out a 1-1 tie when they teamed up for a late goal.
“Not many people get this opportunity,” Hampton said. “Their fans and their intensity just made the game so much more exciting. It just makes you appreciate other countries and respect the way they play, because they just love the game so much. It was just an honor to get to play them and get to see what they do. Obviously we’re not used to it and I think it can only help us.”
“It’s obviously a different game than we’re used to and we did good competing with them,” Garcia said. “They are very fast. Their speed of the game is much faster and they play with a lot of intensity.”
Alliance head coach Jimmy Hampton said he knew his team had the talent to match up with the Mexican squad, but wasn’t sure if their lack of practice time might hurt them.
“Our team has a ton of talent, but they don’t get to train together and fortunately our individual ability bailed us out, because as a team (Mexico) was better,” Oklahoma Alliance FC coach Jimmy Hampton said.Mexico appeared to seal it up when they finally slipped one past the Alliance defense late in the game, taking a 1-0 lead.
But just about four minutes later the Oklahoma squad struck back. A penalty set up a free kick for Dria Hampton. The University of Oklahoma signee drilled the ball right to Garcia, who headed it in for the score.
“I was just like oh my gosh were tied with the Mexican National team,” Dria Hampton said. “When they scored a lot of people were thinking it was over and I was glad we competed until the end.”
The Alliance competes in the Women’s Premier Soccer League. Former Edmond North standouts Allison Farrell and Taylor Fain also played Thursday night for the Alliance.
