Central Oklahoma wrestling has four champs at Central Missouri

Special to The Sun

WARRENSBURG, Mo. — Jordan Basks earned Outstanding Wrestler honors to lead four Central Oklahoma champions at the Central Missouri Open in Warrensburg Sunday.

Basks dominated en route to winning the title at 149 pounds, with the No. 3-ranked Bronchos also getting gold-medal efforts from 133 Casy Rowell, 157 Cory Dauphin and 165 Chris Watson. UCO had two other placers in 197 Garrett Henshaw (fifth) and 184 Kyle Buckley (sixth) in the all-day tournament where no team scoring was kept.

“It wasn’t a bad day, but could have obviously been better,” head coach David James said. “Our four champs were our four returning All-Americans and they did a good job. I was a little disappointed in a few weights where we didn’t perform like we need to, but it’s early and we’ll get better.”

Basks won five matches on the day, scoring first-period falls in his first three bouts. The No. 2-ranked senior claimed an 8-2 win in the semifinals before edging Central Missouri’s seventh-rated Frank Cagnina 5-2 in the finals.

The fourth-ranked Rowell also went 5-0 in the tournament, opening his day with back-to-back major decisions. Rowell pulled out a 1-0 victory in the quarterfinals, won 5-1 in the semis and trimmed McKendree’s Brendan Murphy 4-3 in the title match.

Dauphin, the defending national champion who is ranked No. 1, went 5-0 to run his winning streak to 23 in a row. The senior standout started with consecutive falls and then had 8-4 and 5-2 wins before slipping past Greg Hegarty 3-2 in the finals.

The third-rated Watson followed a first-round bye with 12-1, 6-0 and 6-5 wins before blanking Central Missouri’s Ty Loethen 3-0 in the championship match.

Henshaw lost his first match of the day before bouncing back with three straight consolation wins. He fell in the consolation semifinals, but ended the day with a 4-1 win over Fort Hays State’s Zack Grimes in the fifth-place match.

Buckley went 3-3 on the day, rebounding from an opening-round loss with three consecutive wins before losing two straight.

UCO continues its early-season open tournament schedule Saturday with the trip to Kearney, Neb. For the UNK-Holiday Inn Open.
