EDMOND —
The Edmond Memorial wrestling team took a 48-24 win in a dual at Guthrie last week.
Memorial got wins by fall from Mark Delay at 113 pounds, Josh Nunley at 138, Jonah Moore at 145, Tristan McBee at 182 and Jeremy Morgan at 195, and wins by decision from Ashton Stovall at 120 and Alec Warren at 152
“This win gives us a jump start for the District match with Moore this Thursday,” Memorial coach Darren Huff said. “They’ve worked really hard and support each other, so this is one of their goals accomplished for the start of the season. We gained a lot of wins by falls and that is always good. Hopefully some of our guys learned they can wrestle tough and keep working hard.
“Even the guys that lost wrestled hard and kept trying to score points. That means a lot because it’s easy to give up when you’re taking a beating or losing.
“Jeremy, Tristan, Jonah, Josh and Mark did an outstanding job of going out there with intensity and taking care of business pinning their opponents. Ashton had a very tough match and could’ve given up but kept fighting and scored at the end to secure the win. He really fought tough the entire match.”
The Bulldogs traveled to the high-intensity Perry Tournament over the weekend.
Josh Nunley at 132 pounds was the lone Bulldog to make the finals. He defeated three wrestlers to get there and was defeated by state champion Joe Smith 23-6 after being tied 6-6 at the end of the first period. Nunley had placed sixth the previous year at the same weight.
Jonah Moore was the Bulldogs’ other placer. He repeated last year’s results by placing fifth again at 138 pounds.
“Perry’s a tough tournament and a tough tournament to place in,” Huff said. “We only took five wrestlers and two medaled and we placed 12th as a team, so we are pleased with their effort. Josh really wrestled well the entire weekend. Jonah wrestled tough all weekend also before losing in the consolation semi-finals. Others winning matches but not placing were Ryley West, Ashton Stovall and Cole Boker.
Nunley went 3-1 on the tournament, Moore went 3-2, Stovall went 2-2, West went 1-2 and Boker went 1-2.
Next up for the Bulldogs is a journey to Moore on Thursday.
