EDMOND — Senior Cameera Graves had 14 points, junior Tamara Lee added 11, and freshman Aahliyah Jackson had nine as the Edmond Santa Fe Lady Wolves obliterated Lawton Eisenhower 70-34 to lock up the Class 6A Regional Girls Basketball Tournament Championship Saturday at Santa Fe High School.
“We’ve really been working hard the last three or four days on our defense, and it showed today,” said Santa Fe head coach Paul Bass. “We really put a lot of pressure on them and we just played a well game offensively and defensively.”
The Lady Wolves (21-1) came firing on all cylinders out of the gate, building a quick 16-4 lead in the first quarter off of six Lee points. The Lady Eagles (16-8) were unable to devise a solution for Santa Fe’s defense, with all of their first quarter points coming off of free throws.
The Lady Eagles offensive woes continued until 5:45 remained in the second quarter, when Eisenhower’s Taylor Calvert scored two on a layup. Despite notching eight from the field in the quarter, the sudden awakening of Ike’s offense was unable to stem the Santa Fe tide. The Lady Wolves’ lead grew to 19 behind the efforts of Graves and Mariah Williams at the charity stripe, combining for 7 free throw points on eight attempts as the Wolves took a 34-15 advantage into the half.
Santa Fe exploded out of the gate into the third quarter as the Lady Wolves found their touch from beyond the arc. Graves, Jobi Heath, Summer Jones and Tamara Lee all contributed 3-pointers as Santa Fe led by as much as 33 in the frame. The Lady Wolves led the Lady Eagles 55-24 going into the final quarter.
Despite a dropoff in offense in the fourth quarter as Bass cycled in his reserves, the Lady Eagles were unable to make up any ground, falling behind by as much as 38 as Jones drained another trey and the Lady Wolves put Eisenhower down for good.
“Lawton Ike is a good team,” Bass said. “Any time in 6A basketball you’ve got inside threats, you’re going to be good because not a lot of teams have an inside game which defensively is hard to stop.”
Both teams advance to the area tournament beginning Thursday at a site and time to be announced.
Also on Saturday night, the Edmond Santa Fe boys team took a 59-49 win from host Lawton Eisenhower at their regional in Lawton.
