Deer Creek drops Carl Albert again for state title
They did it again.
The Deer Creek girls soccer team knocked off rival Carl Albert in the Class 5A state soccer title game for the second consecutive season.
The Lady Antlers, led by freshman Lauren Haivala’s two goals, topped the Titans 2-1 May 10 at Noble High School.
On May 7, Deer Creek blanked Tulsa Edison 2-zip in the semifinals for a chance to play for its fourth state championship in girls soccer. -
UCO to host US women's sitting volleyball team's exhibition matches against Russia
The University of Central Oklahoma will host five exhibition matches of the U.S. Women’s Sitting Volleyball Team versus the Russian National Women Sitting Volleyball Team beginning tonight at 10. Matches continue on Saturday at 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. and a single match on Sunday at 9 a.m.
This will be the first time the Paralympic silver medaling Team USA has faced Russia since 2011. According to Head Coach Bill Hamiter, these matches will serve as preparation for the Sitting Volleyball World Championships in 2014.
Team USA will be available after each match to meet with fans and sign autographs.
All exhibition matches are free and open to the public. -
Impact-making Graves inks with OBU
When a basketball team goes 80-3 over the years a player was there, that athlete has made a profound impact on that particular program.
Not only did she/he leave a legacy athletically to have that type of success in Class 6A, but left a mark in a leadership capacity as well.
Cameerah Graves, Edmond Santa Fe’s standout guard who led 6A in assists her senior season with 129, signed a letter of intent with Oklahoma Baptist University last week. -
Bronchos fighting short-game woes
Short-game troubles proved costly to Central Oklahoma on the second day of the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla. Thursday as the Bronchos dropped a spot in the team standings.
UCO shot a 320 to finish two trips around the tough 6,228-yard, par-72 Arthur Hills Legends Course at LPGA International with a 646 total, leaving the Bronchos 10th in the 12-team field with two rounds remaining.
Four-time defending national champion Nova Southeastern has a 586 total and leads Lynn by three shots. -
Leagues forming on the Boulevard
Some 95 million people worldwide enjoy the sport of bowling according to Lois Riggan, Secretary of the Edmond Summer Doubles Bowling and Summer Retirees Leagues. She invites area bowlers to get out and join a bowling league and find out what all of the fun is about.
Riggan said, “You can meet wonderful people, have some good exercise and find that it is a great social activity at the lanes.”
Riggan said we have two active fun-filled Senior Leagues in Edmond.
Summer Senior Doubles is open to all adults. Youngest bowlers are early 50s and the oldest bowlers are mid-90s, making all adults welcome. -
Deer Creek continues momentum on the track
The Deer Creek Antlers appear to be on the verge of moving up into Class 6A competition of Oklahoma high school athletics. Both boys and girls track squads appear ready to make that move if their performance in the Oklahoma Track Coaches Association Meet of Champions in Yukon Tuesday carries any weight.
Fresh from state championships in both divisions at Yukon on Saturday, the Antler squads returned to Yukon and captured the featured 400 meter relay in both girls and boys division in impressive fashion.
In addition, Deer Creek sprint champion Otuga Ananaba showed the small school boys how to run the 100 meters as he repeated his state championship gold medal with a 10.75 clocking for the gold. He was followed by Hunter Boykin of Cushing, Andre Seymore of Glenpool and Papi White of Seminole. -
Bronchos begin tourney 9th heading into today's round
Taylor Neidy recovered from a slow start to shoot a 76 and pace Central Oklahoma on the first day of the NCAA Division II Women’s Golf Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla. Wednesday.
Neidy was the only one of UCO’s five players to break 80 on the rugged 6,228-yard, par-72 Arthur Hills Legends Course at LPGA International, with the Bronchos recording a dozen double bogeys and a triple bogey en route to an opening-round 326.
That has UCO ninth in the 12-team tourney heading into the second of four rounds today. Four-time defending national champion Nova Southeastern shot a 292 and has an nine-shot lead over Lynn. -
Pitcher Lopez makes First Team All-Conference for UCO
Pitcher Edgar Lopez led seven Central Oklahoma players named to the All-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association baseball teams, the league announced.
Lopez was a first-team selection, while pitcher Ethan Sharp, designated hitter Matt Malloy, shortstop Cesar Wong, third baseman Matt Johnson and outfielders Tyler Crabtree and Jared Wright all earned honorable mention honors.
A senior from Yuma, Ariz., Lopez posted an 8-3 record heading into the semifinals of the MIAA Post-season Tournament. The crafty right-hander entered that contest with a 3.86 earned run average and had struck out 78 batters in 84 innings. -
Edmond Memorial has 6 athletes sign letters of intents
Six Edmond Memorial Bulldogs signed letters of intents with prospective colleges just prior to the end of the school year.

Girls basketball camps offered through Edmond Schools
The three head varsity girls basketball coaches (Dandy Peeler, Edmond Memorial; Karlie Free, Edmond North; Paul Bass, Edmond Santa Fe) of Edmond Schools will be hosting a youth basketball camp for girls entering kindergarten-ninth grades at Edmond Memorial High School May 28-31.
