Classen Curve Shopping Day benefits Girl Scout scholarships

Special to The Sun

OKLA. CITY — Classen Curve merchants will have a one-day shopping event to benefit Girl Scouts Western Oklahoma on Thursday. During the “Earn Your Shopping Badge” event, participating Classen Curve merchants will donate 10 percent of the day’s sales to support college scholarships for high school girls who have earned their Gold Award, the highest achievement in Girl Scouting. To earn the Gold Award, girls further develop their leadership skills by planning and implementing a major community service project.

“This will be a great opportunity for shoppers to not only visit the premiere OKC location to dine, shop and play, but to also support the Girl Scouts organization in building girls of courage, confidence, and character,” said Debbie Repka, operations manager for On a Whim.

GS Cornerstone, the young professionals group of Girl Scouts Western Oklahoma, is organizing the event. In 2012, GS Cornerstone established the Gold Award Scholarship Fund and set a goal of raising $20,000 to turn the fund into an endowment. The group is awarding its first two Gold Award Scholarships of $500 each at the Girl Scouts Western Oklahoma Girl Awards Ceremony May 4 at the University of Central Oklahoma.

The “Earn Your Shopping Badge” event is open to the general public. Those attending the March 28 event are encouraged to wear something green to show their support for Girl Scouts. Participating Classen Curve merchants include On A Whim, Liberté, Winter House Interiors, Green Goodies and Black Optical. Other merchants offering support include Barre3, Uptown Kids, Steven Giles Clothing, Café 501 and Carwin’s Shave Shop.
