McALESTER — A McAlester couple faces felony child abuse and neglect charges after officials this week found burns and bruises on the body and head of their 2-year-old son.

Kyle Daniel Hoppe, 31, and Destiny Hope Kelley, 20, of McAlester, was charged March 27 in Pittsburg County District Court. Hoppe is charged with felony child abuse by injury and child neglect. Kelley is charged with felony enabling child abuse by injury and child neglect.

McAlester police responded Tuesday to call from McAlester Regional Health Center regarding a 2-year-old boy who was bruised, burned and beaten. He had injuries to his face, torso, legs and genitals, according to a police affidavit.

The young boy had burn marks of a “honeycomb” shape on his back and buttock, several bruises on his arms and legs and additional bruising on his body and face, according the police affidavit. Charges allege he also had injuries to his genitals, blood in his eyes, additional burns on his body and scalp, and two ribs that had been  previously broken, the affidavit states.

An emergency room nurse told police the case, “was one of the most severe she had seen,” the affidavit states. “Not in the fact that the injuries were life-threatening but the overall magnitude of the injuries.”

An emergency room doctor also told police “this was one of the more severe cases he had seen of injuries to a child,” the affidavit states.

When police observed the boy, he “was very subdued and was not interacting in a manner which ... would (be) expect(ed) from a toddler,” the affidavit states.

According to court records, the child had allegedly sustained some of his injuries two weeks prior to receiving medical attention.

If convicted, both Hoppe and Kelley are facing up to life in prison. They remained jailed at presstime and were unavailable for comment. Hoppe is jailed in lieu of $100,000 and Kelley’s bail is set at $25,000.
