Tulsa standoff ends peacefully, hostages safe

TULSA — A 9-hour standoff at a Tulsa apartment between police and a robbery suspect holding a woman and her 6-year-old daughter hostage ended peacefully Tuesday morning.

The hostages were released unharmed and the suspect surrendered, Tulsa police said. A second man in the apartment was taken into custody while police investigated his role.

Two men, each armed with a handgun, robbed a Dollar General Store and a Subway restaurant Monday night, said police officer Leland Ashley. Authorities tracked the suspect to the apartment in east Tulsa.

A 21-year-old woman who lives at the complex called relatives and said she and her daughter were being held inside their apartment by her boyfriend.

Police fired a series of flashbang grenades into the unit about 7 a.m., but the men stayed inside, Ashley said. Officers then tossed a telephone into the apartment to establish contact with those inside.

Ashley said it was not clear if weapons were used in the standoff.

The 32-year-old robbery suspect was also being held on an initial accusation of kidnapping.
