Dewey County sheriff charged with embezzlement

TALOGA — Dewey County prosecutors have charged the local sheriff with embezzlement by a county employee.

Prosecutors filed the charge Thursday against Sheriff Carl Freeman, saying in court papers that he sold a handgun in November 2007 that had been seized during an investigation, then kept the money for personal use.

Freeman did not immediately return a phone message left with his office on Friday morning.

According to the affidavit, Freeman acknowledged to three subordinates on Monday that he had sold the gun. The affidavit says that on Tuesday, Freeman contacted the person to whom he sold the gun in an attempt to buy it back.

The affidavit says the next day, Freeman wrote a personal check for $50 and paid the person. It also says Freeman told a county commissioner he would be resigning by next Monday.
