EDMOND —
Panhandling and hard work paid off for University of Central Oklahoma students during Poverty Awareness Week Sept. 30 to Oct. 5.
Central students raised $1,150.17 and collected a total of 252.2 pounds of non-perishable items.
The non-perishable items were collected though a food drive and the students earned the money by panhandling during Shack-a-thon, an annual event where students relocate from their comfortable dorms to cardboard boxes on the campus sidewalks around Broncho Lake.
Twelve teams participated in Poverty Awareness Week. The winner of the week raising the most money was Kappa Sigma fraternity, raising $222.68. Brothers Under Christ was awarded second place with $167.66 and National Panhellenic Council came in third with $145.62.
All money and items donated benefit the new Central Pantry, a pantry that will serve current students, faculty and staff in need from its location in the NUC, Room 203.
“We are very pleased with how the week went. Our students were very active participants and never lost interest during the week,” said Lyndsay Holder, assistant director of the Volunteer and Service Learning Center.
