EDMOND —
The University of Central Oklahoma will celebrate Native American Heritage Month with a series of events throughout November, beginning with a kickoff event at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Old North Amphitheater.
Festivities will include displays of talent from Native American drummers and fancy dancers. At noon, the event moves to Broncho Lake for a free lunch for attendees.
“Native American Heritage Month is another opportunity for the Central community to see our commitment to celebrating the diverse cultures represented on our campus. Whether you enjoy traditional foods and dances or learn a new language, the experience will be transformational,” said Lindsay Echols, coordinator of Central’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion.
Other events throughout the month include:
• Fall Stomp Dance — 2 p.m., Nov. 11, Nigh University Center Ballrooms
• “Misrepresentation of My Nation,” a forum on stereotypes of Native Americans — 6 p.m., Nov. 14, NUC 320C
• “Rock Your Mocs,” a day to proudly wear moccasins on campus — Nov. 15
• “Meet the Chief,” an opportunity to meet Chief Leonard Harjo of the Seminole Nation — 6 p.m., Nov. 15, NUC 301
• “Webs We Weave,” the history of the Native American dreamcatcher — 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Nov. 26, NUC Food Court
The month also includes a series of “brown bag lunches” covering various topics concerning Native Americans.

ACM@UCO to host Guns N’ Roses guitarist Richard Fortus for master class
The Academy of Contemporary Music at the University of Central Oklahoma (ACM@UCO) will host guitarist Richard Fortus, member of legendary rock band Guns N’ Roses, for a free, public master class at 7 p.m., Feb. 21 in the ACM@UCO Performance Lab, 329 E. Sheridan in Oklahoma City’s Bricktown district.

UCO design department to open ‘Brand New’ exhibit
The University of Central Oklahoma Department of Design will open “Brand New,” an exhibition of brand development projects by Central design students, with a reception from 4-6 p.m. Feb. 21 in the Donna Nigh Exhibit Hall located on the third floor of the UCO Nigh University Center.

University of Central Oklahoma-based Oklahoma A+ Schools (OKA+) will host “Make Way for Writing: An Arts Integration Workshop for Educators,” a statewide seminar that will offer pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers experiences in creative writing activities.

UCO to host former chief of staff to Colin Powell
The University of Central Oklahoma will welcome Col. Lawrence Wilkerson, who served as chief of staff to former Secretary of State Colin Powell from 2002-05, for the special presentation “We Need Not Be Enemies: Iran and the U.S. in the 21st Century” at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 5 in Nigh University Center Ballroom C.

AT&T aids Bridge students at Oklahoma Christian
AT&T Oklahoma awarded $15,000 to Oklahoma Christian University to assist in funding its Bridge program, which provides academic and emotional support for underprepared freshmen students. The gift was made during an ceremony Monday afternoon on the OC campus. AT&T made a previous donation of $15,000 in 2011.

OC instructor, students screen movie at Trail Dance Film Festival
An Edmond college group screened their independent film “Dead Tired” over the weekend. Oklahoma Christian University Eagle Broadcasting Director David Jurney and his students produced the film last year. It was selected by the Trail Dance Film Festival and was shown Friday and Saturday in Duncan.

UCO School of Music presents early 20th century-themed concert
The University of Central Oklahoma School of Music will present an early 20th century-themed concert featuring Robert Glaubitz, D.M.A., assistant professor of voice, and Sallie Pollack, D.M.A., piano instructor, at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 5 at the UCO Jazz Lab, 100 E. Fifth St. in Edmond.
