EDMOND — Edmond student one of 605 freshmen starting at Lipscomb University

This year Orion Palmer, of Edmond, is a member of Lipscomb University’s 2009-10 freshman class.

Palmer, an Edmond Santa Fe High School graduate, is one of 605 freshmen enrolled at Lipscomb University, contributing to the university’s overall record year enrollment of 3,418. The university experienced a 12 percent jump in overall enrollment from last fall.



Family Weekend set at Oklahoma State University

Oklahoma State University’s Family Weekend 2009, designed to bring students and family members together on the Stillwater campus for a weekend of fun, fellowship and recognition, is set for Friday and Saturday said Fran Gragg, coordinator of the Office of Parent and Family Relations.

Numerous fun activities for family members of all ages will begin on Friday and continue through Saturday.

Friday check-in will be from 2-6 p.m. in the Student Union Atrium. Friday night activities include restaurant specials throughout the community from 5-9 p.m.; Cowgirl soccer vs. Kansas at 7 p.m. on the soccer fields; and Fridays at the fountain from 9-10 p.m. at the library fountain. Student Union activities include spa night from 6-8 p.m., movies at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m., and a bluegrass concert from 8-10 p.m.

On Saturday, check-in will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Union Atrium, with a scholarship brunch from 10-11 a.m. Living group and college events will run through 3 p.m.

From 3-6 p.m., family picture stations, inflatable games and a la carte food choices will be available on the corner of Hester Street and Morrill Avenue, and the Spirit Walk will start there at 3:45 p.m. The OSU Marching Band Concert is set for the library lawn following the Spirit Walk, and Cowboy football vs. Grambling State will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Boone Pickens Stadium.

Former Clinton administration official to lecture on foreign policy

James Lindsay, a leading authority on the American foreign policy making process, will lecture on “The Transformation: Barack Obama and the Remaking of American Foreign Policy” at 7 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Student Union Theater at Oklahoma State University.

Lindsay recently joined the staff of the Council on Foreign Relations where he will direct its studies program. A former staff member of the Clinton Administration’s National Security Council, he also served as a Senior Fellow in the Foreign Policy Studies Program at the Brookings Institution. Prior to his recent appointment at the Council on Foreign Relations, he was the Tom Slick Chair for International Affairs and inaugural director of the Robert S. Strauss Center for International Security and Law at the University of Texas’ LBJ School of Public Affairs.

Lindsay’s research and policy interests have centered on the process and politics of American foreign policy. His contributions to both the academic and policy arena have been substantial, says James M. Scott, head of the political science department at OSU.

“Dr. Lindsay is one of the country’s leading analysts of American foreign policy and his work has made notable contributions to both the scholarly and policy communities on such issues as the structure and process of foreign policy decision-making, the impact of domestic politics on foreign policy and the role of Congress in U.S. foreign policy,” Scott said.

OCU students plan explosive seminar

Students of Arts Management at Oklahoma City University and the OCU Student Government Association are offering a free workshop that’s guaranteed to light up the room.

The free workshop, set for 7-9 p.m. Thursday at OCU’s Freede Wellness Center, will cover indoor pyrotechnics giving participants a look at how fireworks are executed indoors, legal issues and safety tips. Live demonstrations of special effects and electronic firing systems will be part of the presentation.

Students and individuals who want to work in the entertainment industry, such as managing a concert hall or sports arena, are encouraged to attend.

David Rosenbaum, president of North Texas Pyrotechnic Productions, will give the presentation.

“Pyrotechnics are currently used somewhere every day in the entertainment industry,” said Rachel Jacquemain, OCU professor and director of the OCU Entertainment Business Program. “These materials are an extremely risky business. We are excited about offering to our students and the community at large an opportunity to learn about the safe handling of these effects.”
