UCO recognized as a 'great college to work for'

EDMOND — The Chronicle of Higher Education this week named the University of Central Oklahoma as one of the “2012 Great Colleges to Work For.” The university also was named as a 2012 Honor Roll institution because it rated highly in more than four categories.

UCO ranks among the best nationally in seven of the study’s categories:

• Collaborative Governance — employees feel appropriately involved in decisions related to academic programs;

• Professional/Career Development — employees are given the opportunity to develop skills and understand requirements to advance their careers;

• Teaching Environment — faculty believe the institution recognizes innovative and high quality teaching;

• Work/Life Balance — policies give employees the flexibility to manage their personal lives;

• Confidence in Senior Leadership — leaders have the knowledge, skills and experience necessary for institutional success;

• Supervisor/Department Chair Relationship — supervisors make expectations clear and solicit ideas;

• Tenure and Clarity Process — faculty believe requirements for tenure are clear.

UCO President Don Betz said the results of the survey affirm what he has observed on countless occasions and in dozens of ways here at Central.

“To say that I am proud of the accomplishments of Central’s faculty, staff and students would be a profound understatement. They demonstrate daily that they are not going through the routine, not disengaged from our mission here, and not willing to accept outcomes that are just OK,” Betz said.

“At a time of momentous challenge and profound change, the faculty and staff have committed to creating and sustaining a culture of learning, leading and serving, and I revere this devotion to our students as together we teach and mentor them to a hopeful future.”

Results were determined through a direct survey of faculty and staff at universities and colleges throughout the country. This is the fourth time in the past five years the university has been named to the list, with past recognition in 2008, 2010 and 2011.

The “2012 Great Colleges to Work For” list is based on responses from nearly 47,000 people at 294 institutions throughout the country. Of those participating institutions, 103 received recognition on the list. The program is open to most accredited institutions in the United States with an enrollment of at least 500 in the fall, and participation is free.

The survey ranked colleges and universities in 12 categories. Central’s peer group in this poll included universities and colleges that have 10,000 or more students. Central has nearly 2,700 full- and part-time employees, and is Edmond’s largest employer.
