UCO plans month of activities in fight against breast cancer

EDMOND — The University of Central Oklahoma students hope to raise breast cancer awareness and funds to support research, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure through a series of campus-wide activities during October.

“Students need to know how easily this disease can affect a loved one or even themselves. Raising awareness can help save lives and getting students involved in events like these builds a sense of community,” said Tess Bromme, student coordinator for Central’s Women’s Outreach Center.

“By attending the events I hope the students understand this disease more fully and continue to help fight for a cure even outside of the month of October.”

All proceeds raised during the month will be donated to Susan G. Komen for the Cure-Central and Western Oklahoma.

Activities for Breast Cancer Awareness month include:

• Pink Volleyball Game, 7 p.m. today, Hamilton Field House: Watch the Broncho volleyball team take on the Southwest Baptist University. Those in attendance are encouraged to wear pink.

• Power of Pink: Breast Cancer Walk, 8 a.m. Saturday, Hafer Park: Join the ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority as they promote the importance of a healthy lifestyle in a fun and interactive way.

• Breast Dressed Contest, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 22-25, second floor of the NUC: Bras decorated by student organizations and Central departments will be on display. The Central community members will vote for the winner by donating money to the jar in front of their favorite bra.

• Lady in Pink: Breast Cancer Awareness Forum, noon to 1:30 p.m. Oct. 23, Cherokee Room, NUC: Educators, Edmond community members, and health professionals will provide information about healthy living, which could reduce the chances of breast cancer, and also will provide in-depth information about what to look for in self-examinations.

• Thriving & Surviving: Tribute Concert & Balloon Release, noon to 1 p.m. Oct. 25, blue tent near Broncho Lake: Throughout the week faculty, staff, and students are invited to donate $1 for a balloon in memory or in honor of someone who has battled, died from or survived breast cancer. The month will conclude with the balloon release ceremony, live music and inspirational speeches.
