Santa Fe student takes top score on ACT

EDMOND — For the third semester in a row, Santa Fe High School has had a student score a perfect 36 on the ACT.

Steven Kappan, a Santa Fe senior, is the son of Ann and Biju Kappan.

Proving if at first you don’t succeed, keep trying, Steven made his perfect score the fourth time he took the test.

Of taking the test multiple times, Steven said, “I learned my weak points and the format of the test,” making it possible for him to hone his test-taking skills the last time he took the test.

Steven said he is always challenging himself to constantly do better. He has taken four Advanced Placement classes prior to this year and is now enrolled in five AP classes as he prepares to enter college and work toward a degree to be a pediatrician.

His former academic team coach Mark Becannen, and his band director Mike Lowery have been inspirations to him as a student.

“They really instilled in me the drive I have today,” Steven said.

His favorite subjects are history and science.

“I like learning about people,” Steven said, “and I like learning how the world works.”

His extra-curricular activities include band, National Honor Society, Latin Club and the Academic Team.

Although it depends on the week, Steven said he may spend eight hours a week studying.

“Some learning comes easy for me,” Steven said. “It depends on the subjects. Everyone struggles.”

Coming from the Mustang School District when he was in fifth grade, Steven has spent the rest of his learning years in Edmond Public Schools.

His suggestions for other students when preparing to take the ACT test include start with a diagnostic test and focus on your problem areas and get familiar with the test, especially the length.
