EDMOND —
The University of Central Oklahoma will celebrate the opening of the Central Pantry at 10 a.m. Thursday in Room 203 of the Nigh University Center.
An outreach effort from Central’s Volunteer and Service Learning Center (VSLC), the pantry will serve as a resource for Central’s students, faculty and staff who need assistance by providing non-perishable foods and hygiene products at no charge.
“From our students working towards a degree to our faculty and staff that help these students, we want to enable them to focus on their goal without the added burden of food insecurity. The Central community takes care of each other, and in that vein of thinking, opening the Central Pantry is the right thing to do,” said Lyndsay Holder, assistant director of the VSLC.
The Regional Food Bank of Oklahoma helped the VSLC set up the pantry, adding the benefit of their years of experience serving the community to this new outreach effort.
“The Regional Food Bank has vast resources to help satellite pantries, like Central Pantry, be successful. They have taught us how to run the food pantry and inspect our space to make sure it meets their expectations. Also, we can order food from them at little or no cost to the pantry,” Holder said.
The opening ceremony of the pantry will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, refreshments and comments from university officials including UCO President Don Betz.
The ceremony is open to the public and all attending are encouraged to bring a canned food item.
The pantry will also accept donations of non-perishable food and hygiene items from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday in the VSLC office, Room 212, NUC.
The pantry will be open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and will be closed when the university is closed. Those who wish to utilize the pantry must provide documentation of current enrollment or employment at the university.

President pledges to aid Moore disaster recovery
President Barack Obama pledged full federal government support Tuesday morning as rescue workers continued to search for survivors amid the destruction left by the tornado which devastated Moore and parts of Oklahoma City.
