Dancers seek end to violence against women

EDMOND — Members of the University of Central Oklahoma community danced for a cause — to support the demand to end violence against women.

While debate on the reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act intensified in the halls of Congress, the UCO Women’s Outreach Center and the Women of Many Ethnic Nationalities (W.O.M.E.N.) hosted a week of events to raise awareness for violence against women during V-Week.

Thursday afternoon, dancers showed their stuff during One Billion Rising in the Nigh University Center. The event included a DJ and those who attended were invited to sign a pledge stating that they won’t stand for or participate in the status quo that says violence against women is normal. The first 150 participants got a free T-shirt.  

Tess Bromme, student coordinator for the Women’s Outreach Center, helped organize the dance.

Another event Thursday was staffing of a Safe Love Table. It provided UCO students with relationship advice and free Valentines Day candy. Donations were collected for the Oklahoma City branch of the YWCA.
