Quick-thinking Edmond Police officer seizes drugs, cash

EDMOND — An Edmond Police officer armed with information from one scene went to another where ecstasy, marijuana and a $1,160 stack of cash were seized, an incident report shows.

At about 10:40 p.m. March 9, Police Officer Mason Long received information about suspected drug activity at an apartment at 1305 S. Broadway, according to the report filed by Long.

Long stated that he had pulled over a vehicle with an inoperable tag light when he noticed the odor of marijuana coming from it. During his probable cause search of the vehicle, Long located some text messages related to drug deals, the report stated.

One of them stated that a male recently had “re-upped,” Long stated.

An unidentified person told Long the male maybe possessed just a small amount of marijuana, the officer stated. The unidentified person said he was going to see this person who would have a white Chevy four-door at the Broadway Suites, 1305. S. Broadway, the report stated.

Long stated that he suspected the unidentified male was going either to use illegal drugs or to buy them.

At the hotel, Long saw the vehicles belonging to the suspect in the parking lot, the officer stated. He walked alongside the building closest to the suspect vehicle to see if he could smell any illegal drug activity, the report stated.

As Long walked around a corner the unidentified male asked if it would be OK if the officer spoke with the suspect, Long stated. The unidentified male agreed and knocked on the room in question, the report stated.

The unidentified male knocked on the door; a man and a female stepped outside, Long stated. After the man agreed to cooperate, Long asked him if there were any drugs inside, the report stated.

Long stated the man said there was a small bag of marijuana he had shoved down the sink.

The female, who was living in the room, let the officers search the apartment, Long stated. Inside, officers found the marijuana in the drain, a stack of cash that amounted to $1,160, a plastic bag containing 8 grams of powdered ecstasy and many capsules; some of the capsules were already loaded with ecstasy and some were not, the report stated.

Under questioning, the man and female admitted the cash was proceeds from selling ecstasy, Long stated.

Long stated that he arrested Jeremy O’Dell Smith, 23, of Edmond, and Meghan Renae Smith, 22, of Guthrie, on state complaints of trafficking a Schedule II controlled dangerous substance (ecstasy) and possession of drug proceeds. Both were being held in the county jail on $40,000 bond, according to jail records.

Smith said they bought the ecstasy in Oklahoma City earlier that week and that they had sold 60-65 pills already, Long stated. Officers seized 61 ecstasy pills and the 8 gram baggy containing a drug that field tested positive for ecstasy, the report stated.

The drugs were sent to the OSBI for analysis, Long stated.
