Self-assess your driving skills with AARP quiz

EDMOND — Touchmark at Coffee Creek will offer a six-hour defensive driving course May 7 to residents and members of the public to refresh driving skills, hear about updated traffic rules and learn how to adjust driving for changes in hearing and vision. Class participants may be eligible for an auto insurance discount.

“Our class is geared to the older driver. We talk a lot about physical limitations as we age — eyesight and hearing issues. And we talk about some things to do to counteract those issues,” said Charles Reffner, AARP defensive driving instructor.

The class includes self-assessment quizzes and exercises to help determine whether one is safe behind the wheel. The course also covers being on the lookout for other drivers, vehicle equipment and driving capabilities.

Reffner said taking the defensive driving course not only allows for discounts on auto insurance under Oklahoma law but also provides safety strategies to keep motorists driving longer and safer.

“When it’s time to hang up the keys, it’s never a fun subject, but it’s a fact of life for all of us as we grow older. One of these days, we’ll just be a danger on the road,” he said.

Reffner recommends having conversations about driving beginning at age 50 at least, so when the time comes or age-related illnesses set-in, couples or individuals already will have made decisions about driving. He adds those conversations might also include planning to live at a retirement community like Touchmark, where there are transportation options.

The defensive driving course will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 7 in the Grand Hall at Touchmark, 2801 Shortgrass Road, Edmond, and is open to 35 students. The cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for others.

Touchmark is part of the Coffee Creek 638-acre planned residential development, which includes a golf course, recreational centers and walking and biking trails for Coffee Creek homeowners. A full-service retirement community, Touchmark at Coffee Creek offers a wide range of homes and lifestyle options. For more information, contact Touchmark at 340-1975 or visit
