EDMOND — Downtown strollers now can stop for lunch or dinner at Siam Smile, a new Thai food restaurant at 108 S. Broadway.
Nanthana Sorathorn, restaurant manager, was named the fastest Thai cook in San Francisco. Before moving to Edmond with her sister, who owns Siam Smile, Sorathorn owned her own restaurant, Yamo Thai Kitchen, for more than 10 years in California.
“I know how to use all the spices,” she said.
Sorathorn’s daughter, Anunya Hiranrattana, and sister Supawan Wong help in the kitchen. Hiranrattana soon will leave for California to study to be a pediatrician. Sorathorn’s family owns several Thai food restaurants in Texas, California, Louisiana and now Oklahoma. The family traveled to 25 states in the past six months before they found a home for their new restaurant in Edmond.
“I like an old town like this,” Sorathorn said. “This is a nice community.”
A name was chosen for the family restaurant that would fit Edmond. Siam was the former name of Thailand.
“Thailand is the land of smiles,” Hiranrattana said. “When you come they welcome you and smile.”
Siam Smile customers can expect freshly cut vegetables and food cooked one order at a time.
“This is original Thai food,” Sorathorn said.
Hiranrattana said they have six to eight sauces, which are all homemade. Some of the sauces, especially the peanut sauce, take two days to make, she said.
Entrées have different sauces to give different tastes. Sorathorn said their sweet and sour sauce is popular among people who don’t like spicy food.
The lunch menu ranges from $7.95 to $10.95 and the dinner menu ranges from $10 to $16.95.
She said a restaurant favorite is cashew chicken, which is made with water chestnuts, carrots, green onions and homemade chili sauce.
Sorathorn said one difficult item to prepare is the Red Curry Duck or the “Kang Ped,” which also is a restaurant favorite. The duck is roasted with spices but the bone has to be taken out. The curry is cooked separately, Hiranrattana said. The meal is completed with the addition of pineapple, tomatoes and bell peppers.
“People try it and love the curry duck,” Sorathorn said.
Customers can chose to start their meals with one of the restaurant’s soups, including the popular Hot and Sour Noodle Soup, or one of several appetizers, including chicken spring rolls or potstickers. Dessert options include sticky rice with mango or fried banana or pineapple with ice cream.
The restaurant’s menu also offers several vegetarian dishes.
So far, Edmond customers have enjoyed the Thai cuisine and have promised to come back, Sorathorn said.
Siam Smile is open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday through Saturday.
