Pelican Bay flies open for Memorial Day

EDMOND — For those who opted to stay in town Memorial Day weekend, Pelican Bay Aquatic Center will celebrate the holiday by opening from noon to 4 p.m. Monday.

Brent Bloyed said they began Monday selling season passes, which they limit to 700, and now only have 30 left. Season passes at this time are $80. Bloyed said park rentals for after hours already are completely booked for summer.

Admission did increase from $6 to $7 to offset the cost of chemicals.

“Chemicals went up exponentially last year,” Bloyed said.

Some minor offerings have been added to Pelican Bay Cafe and the deck area. The cafe will feature French fries, chicken sandwiches and slushes in addition to what normally is offered. Tiki Huts, 10-by-10 shaded structures, can be rented for $75 a day.

“It’s really an answer to some things we saw last year,” Bloyed said. “We’re responding to watching people come out, trying to reserve space. I think it will be successful.”

He said sometime this summer they also hope to add a sand volleyball court and a 150-gallon dump bucket in which water cascades over the structure creating a spray effect.

Swimming lessons and aqua camps continue this summer. Camp Neptune will be offered June 15-19 and July 13-17 for children 9-11 years old and Nautilus will be offered June 22-26 and July 20-24 for children 12-14 years old. Campers will enjoy aquatic activities, including kayaking, snorkeling, an American Red Cross Swim Lesson and games.

“Swimming lessons are quickly filling,” Bloyed said. “We’re probably three-quarters full for summer.”

About 20 relief lifeguard positions were created to help relieve full-time lifeguards this season. Bloyed said last year he sent many lifeguards home who were exhausted from the heat. He said sitting in the sun for too long decreases the alertness of lifeguards and having a relief staff will ensure that all lifeguards are alert at all times.
