Judge orders Salina man to stand trial in death of Edmond woman

EDMOND — An Oklahoma County judge has ordered a Salina man to stand trial for the deaths of a prostitute featured on HBO’s “Cathouse” series and three other victims including an Edmond woman.

On Tuesday, Oklahoma County Special Judge Fred Doak ruled enough probable cause existed to have Denny Edward Phillips, 33, stand trial. He is charged in the death of Brooke Phillips, 22, who had worked for a legal Nevada brothel featured on HBO. They were not related.

The other victims in the Oklahoma City Police Department case were Jennifer Ermey, 25, of Edmond, Milagros Barrera, 22, of Mustang, and Casey Barrientos, 32, of Oklahoma City. Brooke Phillips and Barrera were pregnant, resulting in two additional counts of first-degree murder. Phillips also faces a conspiracy to commit murder charge.

Judge Doak overruled Phillips’ motion for a demurrer and denied his motion for a preliminary hearing on a bill of particular. A demurrer challenges the legal sufficiency of a cause of action.

Pretrial conference is set for April 17 before Oklahoma County District Judge Kenneth Watson. Bond was also denied. In August 2012, Oklahoma County District Attorney David Prater filed the charges against Phillips. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

In October 2012, Phillips entered a plea of not guilty.

On Nov. 11, 2009, Prater filed six counts of first-degree murder against David Allen Tyner, 30, of Locust Grove, in the deaths. Prosecutors accused Tyner of shooting and stabbing the victims and then setting a home in southwest Oklahoma City on fire in November 2009.

In May 2012, Tyner entered a plea of guilty and was sentenced on all six counts of first-degree murder, receiving life without the possibility of parole.
