Official: Cause of apartment fire unknown

EDMOND — A fire official said the cause of a fire that displaced a family from an Edmond apartment is not yet known.

At about 7:58 p.m. Thursday, Edmond Fire Department units responded to the Sunset Ridge apartments, 930 S. Boulevard, Edmond Fire Maj. Bill Brown said.

When crews arrived they found heavy smoke and flames coming from a second story unit in the complex, Brown said. Several adjacent units were damaged to a lesser degree, and a unit below received water damage, he said.

A neighbor was home but the residents of the unit that suffered heavy damage apparently were not home at the time,” Brown said. No residents and no firefighters were injured, he said.

Fire crews were at the scene until about 10:40 p.m., Brown said.

Total loss was listed as $40,000, with $30,000 property loss and $10,000 content loss, Brown said. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire, Brown said. It was learned that smoke detectors in the unit suffering the fire damage did not contain batteries, he said.

The American Red Cross responded to the scene and  apartment management was going to relocate at least one family, Brown said.
