Bob and Judy Griffis, residents of Edmond for 38 years, will observe their 50th wedding anniversary on April 18, 2015 with a celebration hosted by their children.
Robert Marshall Griffis and Judith Carol Ryan were married April 18, 1965 at the Council Valley Advent Christian Church in Yale, Okla.
The couple met in 1963 while Bob was moonlighting as a police officer at Mercy Hospital and where Judy was a student nurse. Bob thought Judy was the cutest thing he had ever seen, and Judy thought Bob was handsome, too. As he would arrive on the elevator to patrol their hall, Judy’s coworker would call her at the nurse station to let her know he was headed in her direction. As they spent time talking and getting to know each other, Bob asked Judy out several times but she was very shy. To help encourage her, a co-worker made a fake bet with Judy. So to win the bet, Judy got up the nerve to say “yes” and the rest is history.
Bob retired from the Oklahoma City Police department after 22 years of service. Judy is a retired registered nurse with 31 years of service with Children’s Hospital of Oklahoma. Through the years, they have supported each other in all work and educational achievements. Bob completed an Associates degree in Police Science from Oklahoma State University, a Bachelors degree in Sociology/Criminal Justice from the University of Central Oklahoma and a Masters degree in Political Science/Urban Affairs, also from UCO. Judy was a graduate of Mercy School of Nursing. She later completed a Bachelors degree in Nursing from Oklahoma Baptist University and a Masters degree in Public Health from University of Oklahoma.
Now both retired, Bob and Judy enjoy traveling the world, spending time with their friends; their family: children, Steve Griffis and Angela Griffis, both of Edmond, and Mitch Griffis of Amarillo, Texas; and spending time with each other.
