The Edmond Dog Park pond is temporarily closed due to concerns with blue-green algae in the area. Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation staff inspected the pond on Wednesday and found a small amount of the bacteria in the pond. With that information, city staff has decided to close the pond access at the dog park until weather conditions become less favorable for the growth of blue-green algae.

“We decided to be proactive and cautious to ensure the safety of our local dogs and their owners,” said Parks & Recreation Director Craig Dishman. “The risk is very low right now and no illnesses have been reported, but we encourage anyone who has concerns about their dog’s health to consult their veterinarian.”

Blue-green algae is common in this type of body of water due to hot summer temperatures and reduced rainfall. Staff will monitor the pond and determine an appropriate time to reopen it after the hot, dry weather pattern changes.
