There was a lot of celebrating Thursday morning at Memorial High School, and it wasn’t parents celebrating the advent of school.

Teachers young and old alike, experienced and inexperienced, were greeted as the song “Celebration” permeated the air while lights flashed on the stage during Edmond Public Schools’ Teacher Convocation.

According to Betsy Banks, personnel secretary, 145 new teachers swelled the ranks of Edmond teachers to 1,345.

Some of them will be crossing the threshold of their classroom for the first time while others are moving from another district.

Edmond teachers had more than one reason to celebrate. They learned Thursday they will be receiving a raise of $550 in addition to their step increase.

While regaling the teachers with humorous anecdotes, Edmond Teacher of the Year Martha Wissler told them, “Let’s go stomp out some ignorance!”

With the motto “Edmond Public Schools: Defining Excellence,” Superintendent David Goin welcomed teachers as he invited them to celebrate a new beginning.

Goin told the teachers defining excellence is a never-ending process, and he urged teachers to empower their students as they grow into adulthood.

“In the race for quality there is no finish line,” Goin said. “Failure is not an option.”
