One local businesswoman is taking advantage of the golf/business connection in Edmond to promote long-term care for “the back nine of life.”

Kaye Love, long-term care insurance specialist with Genworth Financial, has worked in the long-term care field for 12 years. Now she’s partnering with local golf professional Mark Hayes to promote the concept, addressing the need for extended care for those who cannot care for themselves.

Hayes, who will be playing in the upcoming Senior PGA tournament at Oak Tree Golf Club, said long-term care planning is a natural match for those who also would be interested in the tournament.

“It’s the same basic demographics,” Hayes said. “People who buy those policies are in the 45 to 60 age group, the same age who would be interested in the Senior PGA tour. It seemed like a good fit.”

Hayes agreed to endorse Love’s company, and the two are sponsoring an informational clinic for a select group of Love’s clients and potential clients at Oak Tree Golf Club on May 9.

“It’s going to be part promotional and part client appreciation,” Love said. Hayes will make a presentation about planning for the “back nine” of life before providing individual golf instruction for attendees.

“He’ll be working on the fundamentals of the golf swing,” Love said. “I’ll be working on the fundamentals of long-term care.”

Hayes added, “It’s kind of like a perk for people who have bought policies.”

Love said she hopes the approach will encourage people to think about preparing for their retirement years.

“It’s all tied to the issue that when you turn the ‘back nine,’ you’d better have some plans in place,” she said.

Love plans a series of educational workshop to help planners learn about the issue of long-term care, she said, with some of the seminars employing a golf theme.

“The event at which Mark will appear is the kickoff, and groups or individuals who want such a workshop are welcome to call me,” she said.

Hayes currently plays on the Senior PGA tour and owns his own golf course design company. He has been representing Oak Tree Golf Club since 1978 and won four tournaments on the regular PGA tour.
