Retirement

From left, Tara Fair and Pam Merrill attended the teachers retirement reception recently.

On the last day of school, May 20, 59 teachers will be retiring or had stepped down from their posts at mid-term in the Edmond School District.

Among them they had taught a total of 1,199 years in Edmond, with a grand total of 1,554 years in the teaching profession as an educator or a member of the support personnel team.

“It is always a bitter sweet situation when we recognize the retiring teachers in Edmond,” said Supt. Bret Towne. “This year’s group of retiring teachers, administrators and support personnel collectively have over 1,200 years in the classroom teaching and influencing students lives. And while we continue to hire great, new teachers; sage experience is difficult to have when you first start out.”

Towne said this year’s number is slightly smaller than recent years’ retirement numbers.

“The number of retiring teachers positions that will be filled will be dependent on the district's final budget cutting strategy,” Towne added.

Edmond typically loses 125 to 150 teachers each year to retirements and resignations, Towne said.

“If we do have to reduce the number of teachers, there is a high probability the positions can be absorbed. However, this is at the high cost of larger class sizes at all grade levels,” Towne said.

With 40 years of teaching to her credit, Michelle Hasenfratz has been in the Edmond School District the longest amount of time. Most recently she has been a media specialist at Sequoyah Middle School.

Linda McElvany has been in the Edmond School District for 28 years, but she has been an educator for 34 years. Her most recent assignment was as assistant principal at Sequoyah Middle School.

Working in the maintenance department, Fred Snyder has spent 53 years in schools and the last 26 years have been spent in Edmond as Electrical Foreman.

The administration office will be missing one person next year as associate superintendent Tara Fair steps down. She has been in the Edmond school district for 28 years and spent five years working in the Moore and Midwest City school district for a total of 33 years in education. Prior to taking over the position of associate superintendent, Fair had been principal and assistant principal at Central Middle School for 16 years.
