This afternoon, officials with Integris Health will reveal more details of a proposed hospital facility at Interstate 35 and 15th street in Edmond. We say welcome.

One of the most exciting things about the hospital proposal is Integris is willing to bring a birthing center back into Edmond’s city limits. This growing city already has shown a need for medical care for mothers. As of July, there have been 875 births to Edmond mothers at Mercy Health Center and Lakeside Women’s Hospital — the two closest facilities to the city’s limits.

Integris’ proposal is purely about economics. There will be a growing need for more medical care in this area of Edmond as the city continues to grow eastward. The location also will be an attraction to eastern Oklahoma County and Logan County residents.

Some may worry about the effect of this venture on our existing hospital — Edmond Medical Center. We believe that competition leads to a refinement of services and there is no reason to believe at this point that this will not be a good thing for all residents of Edmond.

The fact that Mercy Health Center also has purchased property on I-35 is just another indicator of how important this corridor is about to become in Edmond’s evolution as a city. City leaders have been planning for the past 15 years how this corridor should develop and have been awaiting a building boom. It looks like that boom may be here.
