In all my years as a sports writer, I must say that I have never felt more out of shape, than I did at the state cross country meet at Mitch Park over the weekend.

I can relate to baseball, basketball, and football players, but where do cross country runners get the drive.

As I watched each class run their races, it became very evident, that this is the one sport, that I could not have competed in growing up.

Just couldn’t do it.

The only way you could get me to run through the woods now, is if a wild pack of dogs were chasing me.

Even then, I would be compelled to stop at the concession stand and grab a pack of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups and a Gatorade.

This is a sport that can make you feel bad, for no other reason, than to see these runners going through so much agony as they reach the finish line.

I was gasping for air, just watching them.

These are some of the finest athletes that I have ever witnessed.

Edmond Public Schools did a fine job putting on this event, and hopefully there will be more to follow.

Congratulations to the Edmond North girl’s team, and the Deer Creek boy’s team for winning the state title, and to Memorial and Santa Fe for qualifying for this event.

P.S. If I shook your hand after the meet, I apologize for my hands being covered in chocolate. The melting Reese’s were just too good to pass up.
