Three of Edmond’s brightest athletes were named as this year’s Jim Thorpe Player of the Year award winners for their respective disciplines.
The trio will be honored during the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame’s 35th annual All Sports and Scholar Athlete Awards Luncheon on Thursday.
Two of the trio honored were Edmond Memorial Bulldogs this school year. Memorial’s Loren Ogburn was selected as the girls golf Player of the Year, alongside Chris Dyer’s boys tennis Player of the Year selection.
Deer Creek’s Steven Clark — selected for boys cross country — rounded out the Edmond-nominations for this week’s awards.
The All Sports and Scholar Athlete Awards will be presented by Mike James, OSHOF president, and OSHOF Chairman of the Board of Directors Gregg Vandaveer. The awards are sponsored by the Oklahoma Coaches Association, the Oklahoma Chapter of the National Football Foundation, the Oklahoma NFL Players Chapter and the College Football Hall of Fame.
Notable guests at the luncheon are Wayne Wells, Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame inductee; John O’Dell, Oklahoma State director of Fellowship of Christian Athletes; Jean Barrett, president of the Oklahoma Former NFL Players Association; and Merv Johnson, longtime University of Oklahoma coordinator and commentator.
