FINDLAY, Ohio – Central Oklahoma started strong but wasn’t able to mount a last-ditch rally in the final round of the NCAA Division II Central/Midwest Super Regional Wednesday.
The Bronchos closed with a 298 to finish three trips around the 6,722-yard, par-72 Findlay Country Club with an 885 total, good for a ninth-place tie in the 20-team event. Indianapolis won the tournament at 864 and was joined by Tiffin (868), Missouri-St. Louis (872), Southeastern Oklahoma (873) and Arkansas Tech (873) as qualifying teams for the Division II Men’s Golf Championships.
Nick Pierce, Alexander Hughes and Holden Crago all shot 74 for UCO, while Eli Armstrong had a 76 and Wesley Jackson a 78. The Bronchos made a charge up the leaderboard on the front nine after starting the day 11th, but they weren’t able to sustain the momentum.
Central started play on the back nine and Pierce got off a great start with birdies on the par-4 10th and par-5 18th in making the turn at one-under 35. He was still one-under after birdieing the par-5 fourth, but bogeyed the next four holes before finishing with a birdie on the par-4 ninth in coming in with a 39.
Pierce was UCO’s top finisher, tying for 28th with a 221 total.
Hughes was sizzling to start the day, making eagle on the par-4 11th and birdie on the par-3 12th to quickly get to three-under. He double bogeyed the par-3 17th in making the turn at one-under 35, then ran off six straight pars on the back nine before a bogey and double bogey derailed his round.
Crago struggled out of the gate and was four-over after four holes, but he birdied two of the last four holes to go out in two-over 38. He bogeyed No. 1, his 10th hole of the day, but got to one-over with an eagle on the par-5 fourth before making one bogey coming in for a back-nine 36.
Armstrong shot a front-nine 38 and then had two early birdies on the back to get to one-over before making three bogeys the rest of the way for another 38.
