swimming city championships

DREW HARMON/The Edmond Sun Edmond Memorial's Samantha Woodward swims in the girls 200 SC meter individual medley Tuesday evening during the Edmond city championships at the Oklahoma Christian University pool.

Edmond Memorial swimming standout Samantha Woodward has chosen to attend Stanford University, as she gave her commitment to the Cardinals to swim for them next season.

Woodward is a five-time state record holder, and is a two-time national record holder. She is also a 15-time High School All-American.

The senior competed in the Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, over the summer, with Team USA, where she won a silver medal.

Woodward also competes for the Chesepeake Swim Club, where she has won a national championship, and has qualified for the United State Olympic Trials next June.

Woodward is widely considered one of the top swimming recruits in the country as part of the 2007-08 recruiting class.

Stanford, which placed fifth at nationals last year, has a rich history, with several of their swimmers doing very well in the Olympics.

Most recently with Misty Hyman, who took gold in the 200 meter butterfly at Sydney in 2000, and Jenny Thompson who took three gold medals there. Summer Sanders is also a former member of the Stanford swim team.

In all 33 former Cardinals have competed in 13 Olympic games.
